In case someone wants to further chronicle the myriad of tortures suffered by the unreal man - and can I claim to know who the unreal man is?  - please permit me to add a few to the list.

Yes, I would like to help some struggling seeker by telling him, "In the words of Buddha, you must first think of one thing, then of everything, and then of nothing, but it's impossible to think of nothing."

Or several hundred other friendly phrases I have picked up over the years.

The only trouble is, I know and everybody else knows that I don't have the goods to back up such a statement. And the (absurd) humiliation of them knowing that would feel far worse than the simple distress of not knowing.

Oh, you caught my slip of the tongue? That the ego is hurt because he doesn't know the truth that would destroy him? Right, and I have some land in Florida to sell you.

Wait a minute, please don't tell me - he says defensively - I already know that the ego itself is my problem.

Sure I do, I figured that out a long time ago, no need to chide me with that, you know, in front of everybody, all those people I want to help.

Re: Death by a thousand cuts (you wish?)

Yes that is quite a dilemma as you seem to be quite convinced that man is unreal, the very one that wants to help others that must also be an unreal. No?

You say further that you know and everyone else knows that you don't have the goods to back up anything you say. There seems to be a contradiction for you are saying on the one hand you are not real yet the people that you want to help are real, is that really the only trouble?

As for ego, you're one of the most humble people I know, is that what is holding you up? In front of all these people chide you? What people? You mean all those shadows on the wall? Yeah, paradoxical no doubt and perhaps mortifying to the Phantom that claims ownership of the passing waves of psychological trauma. I wouldn't be so sure what other people know for if they think they know it is quite possible that they know nothing

Gurdjieff or maybe it was Ouspenski, talked about the danger of indulging in negative emotion. Somehow I think that discussion is applicable here, but I'm not sure how it is applicable.

To say that any suffering of the ego is worse than the distress of not knowing yourself shows you have not fully plumbed the depths of your dissatisfaction.
